David Smith, LandWatch Intern – Summer 2003

David Smith has joined LandWatch as a summer intern and part-time administrative assistant. David is a student at California State University-Monterey Bay (CSUMB), where he is working for a degree in Earth Systems, Science and Policy. He plans to pursue a career involving environmental justice, policy and law. Throughout David’s undergraduate career, he has participated in and helped organize campus organizations such as P.E.A.C.E (Protecting Every Aspect Concerning the Environment). Before transferring to CSUMB, David helped form Greenprint, a campus organization of administrators, students and faculty whose efforts resulted in creating a “green” blueprint of future growth for Southampton College of Long Island University.

For the past two semesters, David has volunteered at LandWatch through the CSUMB “Service Learning” program, a unique academic-field program that gets students involved in communities while also requiring them to reflect upon service placements. David is passionate about involving communities in public decision-making, and hopes to contribute this enthusiasm to key local issues such as affordable housing. He also runs long-distance and recently completed the Big Sur International Marathon in 4 hours, 2 minutes and 48 seconds!

LandWatch is delighted to have David working on staff during the summer of 2003, and David is excited about the opportunity he’ll have to increase his understanding of land use policy, while helping to make better land use policy actually happen, through grassroots, community work.

David’s telephone is: 831-759-2824, Ext. 11. His email is: David_Smith@csumb.edu.
