The KUSP Land Use Report #28: Hearing Coming on the Salinas General Plan

Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County, presents the following Land Use Report. The opinions expressed by Mr. Patton are not necessarily those of KUSP Radio, nor of any of our sponsors.

It’s "General Plan time" in Monterey County. And in Sand City, in the City of Monterey, in Greenfield, and in Salinas. Each one of these jurisdictions is considering fundamental changes to the General Plan policies that will shape the future of the community.

This is the time to exert your leverage as a citizen or resident. Once a General Plan is adopted, development projects consistent with that plan usually get a green light. So, if you’re concerned about the conversion of farmlands to new subdivisions, shopping centers, offices and factories, now is a good time to get involved. The "Preliminary Draft" General Plan released by Salinas calls for the conversion of over 2,500 acres of agricultural land. The biggest single share of that converted farmland is proposed for the development of low-density residential subdivisions. The public process in Salinas is just beginning. Find out more, by attending a study session scheduled for Tuesday, February 5th. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Salinas Community Center.

While Monterey County governments are working on general plan policies, local governments in San Luis Obispo County are looking for some federal recognition for Highway One, stretching from the City of San Luis Obispo to the Monterey County line. More on that in the next Land Use Report.

For KUSP, this is Gary Patton.
