The KUSP Land Use Report #24: The Sand City General Plan

The following Land Use Report is presented by Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County. The opinions expressed by Mr. Patton are not necessarily those of KUSP Radio, nor of any of our sponsors.

A city or county General Plan gives directions for the future. It outlines what the responsible public officials think is the best thing for that city or county to do. Luckily, the public gets to have its say, before the elected officials vote.

This week, Monterey County has released its draft General Plan Update. Persons interested in reviewing that draft General Plan should contact the General Plan Update Office at 755-5353. Public hearings will be held later this year.

Coming up much more quickly is a hearing on the Sand City General Plan. Sand City is Monterey County’s smallest city. It’s right on Monterey Bay, and it boasts the biggest shopping center on the Monterey Peninsula. The draft Sand City General Plan proposes even more commercial development. It also proposes resort hotels and new housing on the ocean side of Highway One, right on Monterey Bay. This small city is proposing rather dramatic changes to the coast.

A copy of the draft Sand City General Plan can be obtained at the City Hall, or at the Seaside Public Library, or at the Monterey Public Library. It’s worth a look. You may want to get involved. A public hearing on the Sand City General Plan will be held on Tuesday January 15th, at 7:00 p.m. That’s your time to talk, before the elected officials vote!

For KUSP, this is Gary Patton.
