The KUSP Land Use Report #19: The Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary

The following Land Use Report is presented by Gary Patton, Executive Director of LandWatch Monterey County. The opinions expressed by Mr. Patton are not necessarily those of KUSP Radio, nor of any of our sponsors.

The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is an institutional reality, established by a political decision. The "Sanctuary," in other words, is different from Monterey Bay itself, which is one of the wonders of the natural world. Those who understand (or who are seeking to understand) the complex and fascinating biological realities of the Monterey Bay know that our life on land depends on the oceans.

The rules and regulations that establish the Sanctuary provide a mechanism that can balance our use of the Monterey Bay with a proper respect for its natural limits. Those rules and regulations are subject to change, and now is a good time to get involved. A review of the National Marine Sanctuary Program is just beginning. Hearings will be held in Salinas on Saturday December 1st, and in San Luis Obispo on Monday, December 3rd. There will be a hearing in Cambria on December 4th, and in Big Sur on December 5th. Hearings will be held in Half Moon Bay on Thursday December 6th, and Friday December 7th.

What we do on land affects the Sanctuary. How we treat the Sanctuary affects us. For information on the hearings, call the Sanctuary Office at 831-647-4217.

For KUSP, this is Gary Patton.
