More Than 10,840 Houses Approved, More Proposed

LandWatch Monterey County promotes and inspires sound land use policies through grassroots community action. Part of our work involves tracking the developments proposed in our region. Given that two large residential developments are currently proposed in Monterey County, LandWatch is taking this opportunity to inform you about already approved projects and current development plans for the Fort Ord area specifically.

Since 2012, approximately 10,843 housing units have been approved for the region and more than 3,800 of those houses are in the Fort Ord, including:

Project Name

Approved Units

University Villages

1,237

Marina Station

1,360

Marina Heights

1,050

Cypress Knolls*

200

East Garrison

1,470

TOTAL:

5,317

*Cypress Knolls in Marina is currently being re-considered.

LandWatch closely monitors other developments in the Fort Ord area as well. There are two projects currently moving through the environmental review process and will be considered by decision makers soon, including:

Project Name

Units Proposed

Ferrini Ranch*

212

Monterey Downs

1,280

TOTAL:

1,492

* While Ferrini Ranch is not on the former Fort Ord, it is directly in the viewshed of the National Monument and is seven miles from East Garrison.

Though the economic recession may have slowed the actual construction of the approved units, it is clear that developers are getting properties entitled for housing units but aren’t quite ready to actually construct them. With each development approved and eventually built, our quality of life will change because of increased traffic, reduced water supply, and converted natural lands. Between the approved houses and proposed units there are more than 6,800 on the docket for the Fort Ord area. When is enough, enough?

Know that LandWatch will provide information on Ferrini Ranch and Monterey Downs as it becomes available.
