The Monterey-Salinas Transit (MST) was formed in 2010 to provide bus service to the greater Monterey and Salinas areas as far south as Templeton and Big Sur and as far north as Santa Cruz and San Jose. MST’s mission is to “advocate and deliver quality public transportation as a leader within the community and industry.”

LandWatch is thrilled to announce that the Monterey County Mobility Coalition’s Measure Q passed with 72.4% of the vote in the November 2014 elections. This is an incredible victory on so many levels. Three key ingredients for this win:

Measure Q (147K PDF) will protect essential Monterey County transit services for seniors, veterans and people with disabilities — services that are now set to disappear due to cuts in federal funding. Public transportation is an essential part of a healthy economy and environment.

Every 2½ minutes, a senior, a veteran or a person with a disability boards an MST bus. For many, MST is the sole means of transportation. Unfortunately, the federal government eliminated the dedicated funding for these vital transit programs.

Veterans, seniors and people with disabilities rely on MST’s transit services to get to school and work, to the pharmacy and grocery store, to visit family and friends, and to important medical appointments and even the hospital. Last year alone, MST provided over 500,000 rides for veterans, seniors and people with disabilities.

Measure Q will provide funding dedicated exclusively to transit services for the veterans, seniors and people with disabilities of Monterey County.
